Check out this new report: http://fundingthenews.org/
I’m writing a story on it, so I wont go into too much detail.
But a USC Annenberg report showed that the government has inadvertently funded independent media since its inception through tax breaks, postal subsidies and public notices. This bleeds over to internet because public notices have moved to the internet as well as gov ads.
The myth that the press is truly independent has been broken for me. If it’s not the government doing it, then its political groups, think tanks, advertisers, you name it.
So with that in mind…can they help the media earn some profits? The line, the report says, is drawn at the content. The government will not fund anything content related, but more on the distribution side.
It’s a dangerous line to walk..but apparently it’s one we’ve been walking all along
