This Week in D.C. August 16-20

For Monday

SAIS will host a special event with Secretary of State Hilary Clinton on “The Global Health Initiative: The Next Phase of American Leadership in Health Around the World” at 11:30 AM. Because this will be a tough event to get into, you can check out the live webcast here.

Young Professionals in Foreign Policy will hold a talk on “Building a Foreign Policy that Promotes Human Rights and Democracy with special guest Kathleen Fitzpatrick, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State. the event takes place between 7 and 8:30 and you must be a member to attend.

Busboys and Poets will hold a book talk on “The Empire’s New Clothes: Barack Obama in the Real World of Power” with author Paul Street at 6:30 PM. This new book documents and assesses Obama’s newly emergent record on domestic and foreign politics against his original agenda for change.

The National Military Spouse Network celebrates three months of serving military spouses with its second-quarter networking event from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The event will be held at EatBar, 2761 Washignton Blvd., Arlington, VA.

For Tuesday

The USIP will hold an event on “Crisis in Kyrgyzstan” where panelists will discuss youth and their involvement in the country’s recent upheaval through social media, citizen journalism and the Internet.

The Center for a New American Security will hold a talk on the next phase in Iraq with Michael Corbin, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Iraq and Dr. Colin Kahl, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for the Middle East.

For Wednesday

The USIP will hold a discussion with Ambassador Chris Hill on the United States’ next phase in Iraq from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM.

The Potomac Institute for Policy Studies will hold a talk on “The Next Middle East Wars,” exploring the possibility of war in countries like Iran, Gaza and Lebanon from 12 PM to 2:00 PM.

Center for Global Development will hold an event on “The Duration of Political Power in Africa: The Role of Oil Rent.”

The Middle East Institute will hold an event on the next stages in Iran with Trita Parsi from 12PM to 1:00 PM

For Thursday

The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace will hold a discussion on “India’s Airpower Modernization” from 3:00 pm to 4:30 PM with Indian Air Vice Marshal Matheswaran

For Friday

The National Defense University Foundation discusses “Nuclear Deterrence and the Nuclear Defense” with Steve Henry, assistant to the secretary of Defense for Nuclear Matters at 8:00 AM. The event will be held at the Capitol Hill Club.
